Antique Shopping: Our home is surrounded by a wide variety of Berkshire County's finest antique shops (all within 1 1/2 miles of the house). The shops in our area cater to a wide range of tastes and budgets. You can spend a very pleasant day poking in and out of the many specialty shops that abound in the area.
Bartholomew's Cobble: Located approximately 3 miles from our home, this National Landmark is a 277 acre sanctuary that offers pastoral hiking along the Housatonic river, as well as some of the Berkshires' most stunning mountain views. A moderate walk up Hurlburt's Hill yields a panoramic view of the rolling Berkshire countryside. Atop the hill, one may spend peaceful minutes or hours on comfortable benches -- a terrific place for a great read, a pleasant picnic or for more reflective moments.
The Colonel Ashley House: This historic house built in 1735, is situated on the west bank of the Housatonic river abutting Bartholomew's cobble. It offers the history buff an interesting look into the life of John Ashley, a prominent Revolutionary figure and political radical. Period furnishings, pottery and craftsmanship abound. A great adjunct to your visit to Bartholomew's Cobble.
Appalachian Trail: The "AT" is literally in our backyard! The trail head to Mount Everett is only 3 miles from the house. As you ascent Mount Everett ( a 2.7 mile intermediate climb) you will pick up the AT at the 2 mile mark. You can continue on to Mount Everett and beyond following the AT North or follow the AT South to Mount Race and the Ledges for breathtaking views of the Berkshire valley. Additional hiking and climbing are just a short distance away at Mount Washington (South Egremont) and Monument Mountain
(Great Barrington).
Bash Bish Falls: These celebrated falls are a short drive away (25 minutes) in the Mount Washington area. You can take a steep and exhilarating climb down to the falls from the upper parking lot or take a more gentle hike up to the falls from the lower parking lot. Either way, your destination will end in a beautiful and serene waterfall setting -- a most enjoyable afternoon trip!
Canoeing & Kayaking: The Housatonic river provides a great place to canoe for experienced or novice boatmen alike. The current is gentle, providing you a pleasant and scenic way to pass a sunny morning or afternoon. You may put in your canoe in Ashley Falls just a couple of miles from our house. After your voyage you may store your canoe in our barn until your departure. Or, if you prefer, you may rent a canoe or kayak.
Bicycling: Undermountain Road (which begins 2 miles from our house) offers an incredible scenic ride towards Salisbury and Lakeville, Connecticut. On the way you will meander along rolling fields and picturesque ponds while enjoying excellent views of the Berkshire hills. Take a rest stop in Salisbury, CT for an ice cream at Oscars or a tea tasting at The Chaiwalla tea room to fortify you for your trip back to Sheffield. If mountain biking is more your style, Bear Mountain State Park, Mount Washington State Forest and Mount Everett State Park ( all just a short distance away) offer a strong network of trails open to mountain bikes.
Skiing: There are a variety of downhill and cross-country facilities in close proximity to our home. Butternut Basin ( 8 miles away) offers a vertical drop of 1,000 feet and 22 downhill trails with 6 chairlifts. Catamount offers a vertical drop of 1,152 feet and 25 downhill trails with 4 chairlifts. Cross country skiing areas are plentiful as well. Public ski-touring trails are available at Mount Washington State Forest, Bartholomew's Cobble, Beartown State Forest, Sandisfield State Forest and Otis State Forest. Surrounded by 2000 acres of state and private land for wilderness skiing, Canterbury Farms, in Becket, also offers terrific x-country skiing on 12 miles of groomed and tracked trails. Lessons and rentals are available.
